Good Evening! Or afternoon. Or morning. Whichever it is at the current moment.

Today I am sharing a winter-y/Christmas-y/Holidays-y nail art with you starring my hand blended sheer blue nail polish. I'm cheap. I'll tell you straight out. I get buyer's guilt when I purchase polishes more than $9 more often than not. While I wanted the OPI Color Paints line pretty damn badly, I couldn't justify spending nearly $10 a bottle for the whole collection. So, I took the DIY route and bought several bottles of clear nail polish to make my own sheer jellies. This, obviously, is my blue one. I made a pink, a green, a purple and a yellow but the yellow failed miserably. It is now in the trash.

Now, let's talk about this!

This is what is known as a "pond manicure". Still trying to figure that one out, but the nail art world is strange and there are strange names for things. Pond manicure is basically a super thick jelly sandwich type of deal. Sheer polish, then dots or whatever, sheer polish, art, sheer polish, etc. You can do it as many times as you wish depending on the opacity of your jelly. My blue, since it's hand made, is kinda sheer.

I had to start with two coats of it before going onto the actual art portion. The whole idea of this is to give it depth which I think I achieved. It's my first time attempting this since I've never owned any sheer jelly polishes before. All this manicure is is my sheer blue (Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear Invisible + 17 drops of Xtreme Wear Blue Me Away + 3 drops of Pure Ice French Kiss), Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear White On (a.k.a my go-to white) and China Glaze Fairy Dust. I threw in some loose iridescent glitters in the center of the snowflakestars just because I could.

I do think it has the nice squishy jelly-like appearance which is a definite win on my part. I shall pat my back. I was a little apprehensive when I was doing this because I wasn't quite sure it was gonna turn out well. In the end, I do like it. Also, this is my contribution to the 52 Week Nail Art Challenge for week 28. The theme is "winter". Obvious, no? If you wish to see my other entries to the challenge, you can check out my Nailpolis gallery for the others.

Have a good one!

So...the plan was to get this post out before the end of October, because October is Depression Awareness Month. That clearly didn't happen. Whoops! I got lazy. Really lazy, clearly. For those unaware, the colour of the Depression Awareness ribbon is green, and I do have a fondness for green. Green and purple are my two favourite colours. But I digress. Since I suffer from depression, green is an important colour for me on top of me just liking it, and October's awareness campaign is equally important. Too bad it's November now, right?

I decided to go through my stash of polish since I don't own any of a full collection and go through by colour to do several swatchfests. The first one is green, and I have twelve green polishes total. For now. That'll more than likely change in the future. Let's get on with the swatches!

Color Club: What a Shock! - Neon green with blue shimmers. Dries matte-ish which is typical of neon polishes. Two coats are fine, but three is better to get full opacity. Awesome formula, as expected from Color Club's neons since I've heard so much about them. These photos are three coats with no top coat. Seriously. This green. It's delicious.

The Body Shop: Body Shop Green - Dark blue-based green creme. Kind of a jelly finish, depending on coat thickness, you can get away with two. I did three just for opacity's sake. This colour is definitely the logo colour for The Body Shop. They got it spot on. I was a little surprised that it was a bit patchy at first considering how great the other polishes I've tried are, but hey, it's still great. No topcoat, and it can stain a bit.

The Body Shop: Hemp Over Heels - Dirty olive green creme. I call this the colour of green chilis that are pickled in soy sauce. It's an accurate description. Trust me. I initially hated this colour because really, it's not pretty. But it's also different, and I do like different. Two coats, no topcoat.

Pure Ice: Lucky Charming - Yellow green with gold and green glass shimmers. I bought this in the hopes it was a dupe for my beloved China Glaze Running in Circles. It was not. I was sad. However, I still quite like this polish anyway. Beautiful application, though quite sheer on first coat. This is three coats, and shimmer will get everywhere when you try to take it off. I suggest using some tape and sticking it all around your fingers to get the shimmer off after.

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear: Mint Sorbet - Mint green creme. A TRUE mint green. None of these "I'm turquoise but companies are gonna call me mint green when I'm not!" Though my pictures make it look a liiittle paler than it is in real life. I blame my camera. Two coats, amazing coverage for a pastel plus nice and creamy. I have noticed it WILL get thick pretty quickly over time which happens with the majority of the Xtreme Wear line, but that's nothing nail polish thinner can't fix.

Pure Ice: Free Spirit - Medium grass green with faint silver shimmers. Pretty good coverage. The silver shimmer shows up more in the bottle than on the nail majority of the time, but oh well. Surprisingly stains the nails. Formula is lovely. This picture is two coats.

China Glaze: S'more Fun - Lime green creme. Why the hell is this called "S'more Fun"? I'd love to know their reasoning behind this name. It's *green*. China Glaze, what you thinkin'? I suppose it's supposed to deal with camping and whatever, but this is not s'more. This is...pea soup. I guess. Two coats, surprisingly good coverage. Formula is great, not too thick or thin.
Hard Candy: Gummy Green - Dusty mint green crelly with silver and black glitter. Is this discontinued? I have no idea. It's been sitting in my drawer for gods know how long. It reminds me of mint chocolate chip ice cream and that pleases me. I do know it's best to layer this one over a mint green polish because the base is pretty sheer. It's a bit thick, but it may be because my bottle is so old. Sooo, yeah. That's a thing. And if you're anal like I am, you may find yourself pushing the glitters around to get them where you want them. They deposit enough onto the nail, but some adjusting happens. I did three coats for the pictures without top coat to show that it's not 100% smooth. While it's not hard to take off, expect those glitters to get *everywhere*. Three coats.

Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear: Emerald City - Emerald green jelly with shimmer. Is this one discontinued, too? I have no idea anymore. China Glaze: Running in Circles - True green jelly with gold and green glass flecks. I saved the best for last. And now I am humming Vanessa Williams. This was limited edition for the Cirque du Soleil collection, and I don't think you can get it unless you get it from eBay or maybe amazon which saddens me. This is my favourite green polish. It's so sparkly and shiny, and while there's still some visible nail line after two coats, three coats is fine.

Hope you enjoyed!

So, I've been reading way too many horror manga recently. I have no idea why, but it's just something I've been drawn to doing. It's been a mistake for a lot of them. However, Tokyo Ghoul isn't that bad. One of the characters stitches red thread all through his skin as a form of body modification and that inspired me to do something kinda gory and stitches related. I've never done something like this before, and not in this amount of detail, either.

This took me way longer than I'd like to admit, and that stems from me screwing up the blood spatter nail a lot. I had no idea what to do there. I'm terrible at doing the whole random organic pattern type of thing.

First, I did four coats of OPI's My Vampire Is Buff. I could've done three, but meh. There were spots that made me not pleased. Just to make it more fleshy and less...whatever the hell you call MVIB, I put a coat of China Glaze's Oxygen over top which is sheer but also fleshy beigey kinda thing. Except on the accent nail. I did only three coats of My Vampire Is Buff, followed by a coat of China Glaze's Don't Let the Dead Bite and finally topped that with Oxygen.

The idea of the accent was to make it look like the glitter was broken blood vessels under the nail. Maybe it worked? Kinda?

My paint palette was broken out then, and I got to acrylic paint mixing. I had four shades of red going for the blood, then I had the annoying as all hell task of making a fleshy colour that matched the base but in different tones. I hated my life extremely doing that. Then I stared at the paint and my nails going, "How the hell do I start this?" I looked up pictures online of how body painters do such things and pulled inspiration from that.

First the basic plain red as a base for the gash, followed by the medium-dark red, then the darkest very brown red to deepen the cut. I added a tiny bit of a light red too just for depth. On the outside of the cuts, I added the lightest beige to make it look raised and tried to blend it out a bit with a shade like the base and some water. Kinda worked. I wanted to do some irritation pink, but I couldn't make my pink on the side of irritated and less...pink. I broke out the dotting tool and used the medium-dark red for holes, and my thinnest striping brush in black for the threads.

Then the blood spatter. I eventually got fed up and watered down my medium-dark red paint and used my "mixing brush" to dab splotches onto the nail. Turns out that was a good idea, since it made areas lighter and darker like actual blood. I wasn't expecting that. All in all, I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out for my first gory-ish manicure. Oh, the polish I'm holding is Don't Let the Dead Bite. You can see it's pretty pink in the base, but that pink is quite sheer.

Happy Pre-Halloween Week!
I'm Lynni, a.k.a The Nail Polish Panda. I'm a big nail junkie when it comes to polishes and nail art, and I decided to share that with other people in a blog format. What could go wrong, right? Maybe? Ahem.

Anyway... For my first post, I thought a good start would be twelve nail things I can't live without, plus one bonus extra. These are the things I'm finding myself to be in a tizzy over if I run low on or run out of. Being in a tizzy sucks, so I need to make sure I have a full supply of everything that I adore. I think that's a good idea, no? Let's get started.

I seriously cannot live without the stuff. It's been my go-to product ever since I first bought it and I always repurchase it. Yeah, sometimes it shrinks my polish or makes whites go yellowish over time, but I don't care. It dries fast and penetrates all the layers of polish that I'm too lazy to wait to dry. I buy mine at Sally's Beauty Supply, but you can get it at all kinds of places from Amazon to other e-sellers. I don't know what my nail life was before I used this stuff, but it's changed ever since it was introduced to me by my favourite nail tech Melissa Baxter from Honeybee Esthetics in Hamilton. She used this on me once and when I saw how long my polish lasted without chipping, it was love at first...use? I don't quite know. It feels kind of strange when you first apply it, like it's never quite dry. That's just the whole rubberized effect. Again, I buy mine from Sally's, but it's available at any place that sells Orly products, I assume. (Price varies per seller)

Sephora Crystal Nail File

There was a time where I made the error of using emery boards or metal files on my nails. My nails can break quite easily even though I drink lots of water and use nail oil to keep them both flexible yet strong. The previously mentioned files just made everything worse. Then I heard about glass files, and I went to my nearest Sephora to buy one. Well, my full sized one broke because I kneeled on it. My bad. Now I own a mini size which is just fine for me. It works beautifully, and you can easily keep it clean. I've had mine for about two and a half years-ish. Plus the case it comes in keeps it from breaking should you be clumsy like me. Obviously, you can purchase it at Sephora stores in either pink or purple. Though I don't think the mini size is available anymore. (Full size file: $12.50 CAD)

I'm including these three products as one whole product for the reason that they save my nails as a whole when breaks happen. I can keep them on for weeks, repatching when the gel lifts or breaks off from wear to help tears grow out nicely. The one drawback of this whole system is the gel cure spray stinks. It is one of the most revolting things ever, so do this in a ventilated area. There are a couple tutorials on Youtube on how to patch your nails using this method, and it's way stronger than the nail glue and tea bag way. Yeah, it costs a bit at first, but I've had my products for almost two years and I've only had to replace the gel cure spray once. I snip the silk patches to size which extends the life of them by a ton. Also, you will need a brush to apply this and some acetone or brush cleaner. I use an old L'oreal quick dry bottle which has a brush with plastic bristles. The silk wraps, gel and gel cure I purchased at Sally's. Pictures are from the Sally's website because my products are haggard and terrible looking. (Wraps: $4.49 USD, Gel: $8.99 USD, Gel cure: $7.99 USD)

This stuff has been a life saver for me. You have no idea. So many of my polishes have gone goopy over the years (coughSallyHansenGemCrushpolishescough) and I refuse to let them die. This stuff has rescued them. Not only has it saved those, but it's also helped thin out my Seche Vite when it gets thicker over time. Saves me from having to buy a new bottle so fast. I got this at, surprise surprise, Sally's. I'm sure there are other brands of thinner out there, but this was cheap and while it's my second bottle, it lasts quite a while. I also use it instead of acetone to clean polish off my nail art brushes. ($4.29 USD)

Speaking of brushes, these are my nail art brushes of choice. Excuse their appearance. They are often and well used. I love these brushes to itty bitty pieces. I saw them recommended in Nail It! magazine and also by nail artist JauntyJuli on Youtube. The price is great for this set and the quality of the brushes is incredible. They're a dream to work with when you're using acrylic paint or polish. At the time I'm writing this, they're unfortunately not available at the Winstonia store.

Who said you need extremely expensive removers? I bought both of these at Walmart and they work surprisingly well. Especially the non-acetone remover. I use the acetone for clean up when I mess up around my cuticles and the non-acetone for polish removal to make it less harsh on my nails. I find myself repurchasing these quite often. The downside to the non-acetone remover is that it leaves a gross smell behind for a while, but just wash your hands and you'll be good. ($2.48 USD & $1.98 CAD)

I only bought this a few months ago and I'm already in love. Now, for those of you with latex allergies, I can't recommend this product. It is 100% latex based. My only gripe with this product is that since it's white, there's no colour indication that it's dry like some other products. Simply Peel and Liquid Palisade are two products that change colour when dry. However, the price is way better than both those previously mentioned products and it works amazingly well. It comes off in one thick peel without an issue which is what you want for a latex barrier. This has saved me from clean up hell when I do gradients and I know I'll be buying more in the future from Girly Bits. ($5.00 CAD)

In the past, I'd been using a nail dehydrator before applying my base coat. Terrible idea. I have no idea what made me do that. I saw this on Girly Bits and decided to take a peek. I was convinced enough to try it, and bought a bottle when I got my latex barrier above. I'm so happy I did. This stuff helps keep my polish on longer. It's described on the site as follows: "Girly Bits pH Plus is a pre-polish nail treatment used to raise the pH level of the nail plate, which will improve the adhesion of any nail polish or gel polish to the natural nail. It is especially helpful if your nails are naturally oily, or you frequently experience chipping or peeling with nail polishes." I can definitely say it does that for sure. A bottle will last forever, too. I've barely made a dent in mine! ($6.50 CAD)

Why do I have two cuticle pushers? Because I bought the stainless steel one first from Bornprettystore and thought I lost it. So I went to Sally's to buy the other one. Turns out I now use both. The one from Sally's has a nice little trimmer doodad that's great for getting rid of hangnails, and I use the bladed side of the metal one when I'm doing cuticle removal treatment. Gently, of course. Plus that blade is helpful in getting polish and paint off of my paint palette. ($2.79 USD & $1.99 USD)

Shock! Something else I didn't get from Sally's! I got these from Bornprettystore and I use them not only for doing dotticures, but for mixing paints together or even mixing in nail polish thinner into polish that's been sitting in a well on my palette for a while. They're very multi-purpose tools. I'm sure I'd just use toothpicks for them otherwise, but it's nice to have a set of dotting tools in all different sizes. This was given to me when I mentioned off chance that I didn't own any cuticle oil and it's lasted me ages. But really, any form of cuticle oil would be essential in my nail care kit. It's the only thing I use other than hand cream to care for my nails. I even use it to help with cuticle removal. You can't beat a good nail oil. So I suggest you go and find one.

Bonus Mention: Acrylic Paint

I had to throw this in as a special mention because I use these all the time in my nail art, pretty much. It's very rare that I don't use acrylic paint lately. You can buy paint anywhere, just don't buy it from the dollar store. I learned that the hard way. I bought mine from Walmart, and the ones in the tubes are from Bornprettystore. I use both. But you can get acrylic paint of good quality from craft stores, too. When it comes to those fine details, acrylic paint is the best stuff to use. ($2.49 CAD & $7.19 USD)
